INDIGO - salinity
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
INDIGO consists of 3 cruises conducted in 1985 (INDIGO1), 1986 (INDIGO2) and
1987 (INDIGO3) that must be analyzed separately.
REGIONAL ANALYSIS: INDIGO2 (stations 26 to 74)
Only 1 cross over was analyzed which shows a difference of -0.3 (+/-4.6) ppm
(with cruise 49NZ20031209). This suggests that no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
I suggest no adjustment for salinity.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
INDIGO consists of 3 cruises conducted in 1985 (INDIGO1), 1986 (INDIGO2) and
1987 (INDIGO3) that must be analyzed separately.
REGIONAL ANALYSIS: INDIGO3 (stations 75 to 117)
12 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is +4.7 (+/-5.1)
umol/kg.
All cross overs but 1 show significant differences ranging from 4.3 to 13.3
umol/kg. When the suggested offsets are taken into account the average of all
cross overs is +5.5 (+/-0.7) umol/kg. This suggests that an adjustment of -5.5
umol/kg could be required.
CONCLUSION:
I suggest an adjustment of -5.5 umol/kg for TCO2, in good agreement with the
correction proposed in GLODAP (-6.4 umol/kg).

INDIGO - alkalinity
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
INDIGO consists of 3 cruises conducted in 1985 (INDIGO1), 1986 (INDIGO2) and
1987 (INDIGO3) that must be analyzed separately.
REGIONAL ANALYSIS: INDIGO3 (stations 75 to 117)
9 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is +10.0 (+/-6.7)
umol/kg.
2 cross overs show no significant differences (<5 umol/kg) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no offset in alkalinity. This suggests that no
adjustment would be required.
Interestingly, the other 7 cross overs show offsets increasing with time: from
-5 umol/kg over a 9 years-period (with cruise 320619960503) to -17 umol/kg over
a 17 years-period (with cruise 35MF20040103). The dependence with time suggests
that the differences observed could reflect natural changes.
CONCLUSION:
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for alkalinity, in good agreement with
GLODAP.

REGIONAL ANALYSIS: INDIGO2 (stations 26 to 74)
Only 1 cross over was analyzed which shows a difference of +3.1 (+/-1.8) umol/kg
with cruise 49NZ20031209 which is known to have low alkalinity values by about
10 umol/kg. This suggests that an adjustment of +7 umol/kg could be required.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the only one cross over with cruise 49NZ20031209 I suggest an
adjustment of +7 umol/kg for alkalinity, in good agreement with the correction
proposed in GLODAP (+6.8 umol/kg).

REGIONAL ANALYSIS: INDIGO1 (stations 1 to 25)
8 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is +16.1 (+/-3.8)
umol/kg.
All cross overs show significant differences, ranging from +7.8 to +19.8
umol/kg, and 6 of them involve cruises that are thought to have no offset in
alkalinity. When the offsets suggested for the other cruises are taken into
account the average of all cross overs is +15.8 (+/-2.8) umol/kg. This suggests
that an adjustment of -16 umol/kg could be required.
CONCLUSION:
I suggest an adjustment of -16 umol/kg for alkalinity, in disagreement with the
correction proposed in GLODAP (-6.5 umol/kg).

INDIGO - phosphate
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
INDIGO consists of 3 cruises conducted in 1985 (INDIGO1), 1986 (INDIGO2) and
1987 (INDIGO3) that must be analyzed separately.
REGIONAL ANALYSIS: INDIGO3 (stations 75 to 117)
8 cross overs were analyzed, but 2 are discarded due to large variability (with
cruises 35MF19930123 and 74DI19950106). The average of the 6 considered cross
overs is 1.026 (+/-0.029).
The 3 cross overs involving cruises that are thought to have no offset in
nitrate show ratios of 1.03-1.04. When the offset suggested for the other
cruises are taken into account the average of all cross overs is 1.033
(+/-0.013).This suggests that an adjustment of 0.97 could be required.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the analysis above, I suggest an adjustment of 0.97 for phosphate.

REGIONAL ANALYSIS: INDIGO2 (stations 26 to 74)
Only 1 cross over was analyzed which shows a ratio of 0.994 (+/-0.019) compared
to the cruise 49NZ20031209 which is known to have no offset in phosphate. It
should be noted, however, that the deepest waters show a slightly larger offset
(0.98-0.99).
CONCLUSION:
The only one cross over analyzed here (with cruise 49NZ20031209) suggests that a
small adjustment could be required for phosphate, but the evidence is
insufficient to conclude.
No suggestion.

4 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 1.018 (+/-0.011).
All cross overs show a positive offset, ranging from 1.007 to 1.031. The larger
number results from comparison with cruise 74DI19940219 which is thought to have
low nitrate values. When the offset suggested for cruise 74DI19940219 is taken

INDIGO - nitrate
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
INDIGO consists of 3 cruises conducted in 1985 (INDIGO1), 1986 (INDIGO2) and
1987 (INDIGO3) that must be analyzed separately.
REGIONAL ANALYSIS: INDIGO3 (stations 75 to 117)
15 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 0.973
(+/-0.050).
The 5 cross overs involving cruises that are thought to have no offset in
nitrate show offsets between 0.95 and 0.98. When the offsets suggested for the
other cruises are taken into account the average of all cross overs is 0.960
(+/-0.036). The large uncertainty attached to this estimate is due to the
scatter of the offsets obtained from cross overs found at 56°S, which could be
attributed to natural variability in Antarctic deep waters. It should be noted
however that the 6 cross overs involving cruises conducted in the subtropical
region less than 10 years after INDIGO3 show a smaller offset (0.979 +/-0.007),
which suggests that an adjustment of 1.02 could be required.
CONCLUSION:
Based on the analysis above, I suggest an adjustment of 1.02 for nitrate.

CONCLUSION:
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for alkalinity, in good agreement with
GLODAP.

INDIGO - oxygen
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
INDIGO consists of 3 cruises conducted in 1985 (INDIGO1), 1986 (INDIGO2) and
1987 (INDIGO3) that must be analyzed separately.
REGIONAL ANALYSIS: INDIGO2 (stations 26 to 74)
Only 1 cross over was analyzed which shows a ratio of 1.008 (+/-0.006) compared
to the cruise 49NZ20031209 which is thought to have no offset in oxygen. This
suggests that a small adjustment could be required.
CONCLUSION:
The only one cross over with cruise 49NZ20031209 (BEAGLE Leg 5) suggests that a
small adjustment could be required for oxygen, but the evidence is insufficient
to conclude.
No suggestion.
