GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is +1.4 ppm.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (-2.7 +/-6.7
ppm).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
5 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is +0.5 (+/-1.6)
ppm.
All cross overs show no significant differences (<5 ppm) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no significant offset in salinity. This suggests that
no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for salinity.

The inversion suggest a correction of 3.2 and the mean of the crossovers is
-3.1. These numbers are biased due to the large bias in GEOSECS (-22 umol/kg).
We suggest that no adjustment is applied.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is -6.6 umol/kg.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (+0.9 +/-2.2
umol/kg).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
3 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is -7.5 (+/-13.5)
umol/kg.
2 cross overs show no significant differences (<4 umol/kg) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no offset in TCO2. This suggests that no adjustment
would be required. Note that the other cross over, which shows an offset of 23.1
(+/-7.4) umol/kg, involves the cruise GEOSECS_INDIAN which is known to have high
TCO2 values (by about 22-23 umol/kg according to this study and GLODAP).
This supports no adjustment.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for TCO2.

The inversion suggest a correction of 3.1 and the mean of the crossovers is

the low side, but well within the 6 umol/kg threshold.
We suggest that no adjustment is applied.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is +3.3 umol/kg.

umol/kg).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
4 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is +3.7 (+/-6.2)
umol/kg.
3 cross overs show no significant differences (<5 umol/kg) and involve cruises
that are thought to have no offset in alkalinity. This suggests that no
adjustment would be required. Note that the other cross over, which shows an

which is known to have low alkalinity values as mentioned in the cruise report
(see the Cruise ReadMe file for reference). This supports no adjustment.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for alkalinity.

This cruise is very consistently 1% too low. Xovers with 316N19950829 and
316N19951202 appear unbiased, but then these two cruises are also considered to
be 1% low. All evidence supports increasing PO4 of this cruise by 1% (or even
1.5%). Did 1%.

317519950922 - phosphate
The inversion suggest a correction of 1.0165 and the mean of the crossovers is
0.992. It seems that the phosphate values is a little on the low side and could
be adjusted upwards with 1%. This is, however, below the 2% threshold and the
overall quality of the phosphate data is slightly lower than for nitrate
(although still very high). The crossovers are not entirely consistent either,
some are positive others are negative.
We suggest that no adjustment is applied.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 0.995.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests that an adjustment of 1.03 could be
required (1.028 +/-0.020).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
5 cross overs were analyzed but 1 is discarded due to large uncertainty (with
cruise 49ZS19921203). The average of the 4 considered cross overs is 0.996
(+/-0.016).
All 4 cross overs show no significant differences (<2%) and involve cruises that
are thought to have no offset in phosphate. This suggests that no adjustment
would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The result of the global inversion is not coherent with the result of individual
cross overs from the global analysis (see Cruise plot file: RC_SO). Because the
latter is supported by the regional analysis, it is likely that the inversion
has failed here.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for phosphate.

The inversion suggest a correction of 1.01 and the mean of the crossovers is
0.985. All the crossovers are very consistently on the low side (i.e. <1) with
low standard deviations. The general quality of the GLODAP nitrate data in the
Indian is very high, so even if the 1% adjustment is below the 2% threshold this
seems to be a case when a smaller adjustment is justified. CARINA decided on not
suggesting any adjustment for this cruise, which we here challenge based on the
comparison with other GLODAP cruises in the northern part of the IO, i.e. where
CARINA did not have any cruises.
We suggest an adjustment of 1.01.

The inversion suggest a correction of 1.018 and the mean of the crossovers is
0.97. The crossovers are very consistently on the low side (i.e. <1) so that an
upward adjustment seems well justified.
We choose to follow the mean of the crossovers rather than the inversion result
that seems to be biased by one high cruise. CARINA suggested that no adjustment
should be applied, but this analysis show clearly that an adjustment is
justified.
We suggest an adjustment of 1.03.

33MW19950922 - phosphate
This cruise is very consistently 1% too low. Xovers with 316N19950829 and
316N19951202 appear unbiased, but then these two cruises are also considered to
be 1% low. All evidence supports increasing PO4 of this cruise by 1% (or even
1.5%). Did 1%.

317519950922 - silicate
The inversion suggest a correction of 1.018 and the mean of the crossovers is
0.97. The crossovers are very consistently on the low side (i.e. <1) so that an
upward adjustment seems well justified.
We choose to follow the mean of the crossovers rather than the inversion result
that seems to be biased by one high cruise. CARINA suggested that no adjustment
should be applied, but this analysis show clearly that an adjustment is
justified.
We suggest an adjustment of 1.03.

317519950922 - nitrate

317519950922 - alkalinity
The inversion suggest a correction of 3.1 and the mean of the crossovers is
-3.1. This suggest that the alkalinity of this cruise is probably a little on
the low side, but well within the 6 umol/kg threshold.
We suggest that no adjustment is applied.

317519950922 - tco2
The inversion suggest a correction of 3.2 and the mean of the crossovers is
-3.1. These numbers are biased due to the large bias in GEOSECS (-22 umol/kg).
We suggest that no adjustment is applied.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 1.003.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (0.996
+/-0.005).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
5 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 1.000 (+/-0.005).
All cross overs show no significant differences (<1%), which suggests that no
adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for oxygen.

GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is 1.000.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (1.003
+/-0.021).
REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
5 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 0.998 (+/-0.016).
4 cross overs show no significant differences (<2%) and all 4 cross overs but 1
(with cruise 49ZS1992120) involve cruises that are thought to have no offset in
silicate. This suggests that no adjustment would be required.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for silicate.

317519950922 - phosphate

REGIONAL ANALYSIS:
5 cross overs were analyzed. The average of all cross overs is 0.990 (+/-0.020).
3 cross overs show no significant differences (<2%) and involve cruises that are
thought to have no offset in nitrate. This suggests that no adjustment would be
required.
CONCLUSION:
The result of the global inversion is not coherent with the result of individual
cross overs from the global analysis (see Cruise plot file: RC_SO). Because the

317519950922 - alkalinity
GLOBAL ANALYSIS (Cruise plot file: RC_SO):
The average of all cross overs is +3.3 umol/kg.
The global inversion (WDLSQ) suggests no significant adjustment (-1.7 +/-3.3
Note that the other cross over, which shows an
offset of 12.6 (+/-2.4) umol/kg, involves the cruise 49NZ20031209 (BEAGLE leg 5)
which is known to have low alkalinity values as mentioned in the cruise report
(see the Cruise ReadMe file for reference). This supports no adjustment.
CONCLUSION:
The global and regional analyses agree.
Based on this I suggest no adjustment for alkalinity.
